So octagam went smoothly. We had to poke him twice because the pathologist that did the metabolic blood tests advised that the metabolic tests suggested a peroximosal disorder so the blood test was necessary to rule in or out this possibility. He also suggested the same muscle biopsy that the Pretoria specialists suggested for Mitochondrial disease. This is something we will possibly do when Jason has his surgical procedure as we want to limit his anaesthetics. He needs the muscle biopsy as well as the kidney biopsy.
Jason did have the usual reactions to octagam. He got the jitters and three days after he had fevers and gagging and we couldn't feed him the whole day. This seems to be the norm with him. Usually 3 days after he has a reaction but luckily I managed to control it before it developed into full blown gagging and vomiting.
So another octagam done and Jason's immune system has been boosted. Octagam is human immunoglobulin which Jason is lacking. His body doesn't have the antibodies to fight viral and bacterial infections and octagam replaces the immunoglobulin that he doesn't have. There is no cure for his immune system, he will more than likely have this for the rest of his life. The other option is to have a bone marrow transplant but we are not prepared to take such a risk with Jason. We will rather play it safe and continue with the immunoglobulin therapy.
