popped home to fetch some more clothes for myself and Jason and decided to hang some balloons at home as well. Just a little gesture when he got home to know that I had been there and we were thinking of him!
The plan for feeds today was to bolus feed (feeding without the pump) 3 x 200mls during the day and 75mls an hour over 12 hours. I know Jason doesn’t take well to bolus feeds; he never has so I decided to take it real slow. Gave his tummy a rest from the night’s feeds and started feeding at 11am. I gave him 100mls very slowly and gave him a rest. Then at 12:15 I gave him another 100mls to make the 200ml feed. My plan was to gradually do this in order to make the 600mls that he needed during the day. Anyway not even 5 minutes later Jason started showing signs that he was uncomfortable – grinding his teeth, moving his mouth funny, scratching himself. Bruce arrived as planned but right at that moment Jason then went downhill from there. His stomach blew up like a balloon and was rock hard like full of air. He started gagging, went blotchy red in the face, started sweating at the back of his neck, goosies all over his legs and pooing. He had a violent reaction and was so ill. I was really hoping that Dr. P could see him that way but unfortunately he was busy with a baby in NICU. We tried to get the air out by inserting the extension tube but even that didn’t help. His stomach was rock hard. He eventually fell asleep from pure exhaustion and slept for 4 hours. Quite rough!!
So anyway all feeds have been stopped again in order to give his tummy a rest and tomorrow we are going to give Soya a try. Soya isn’t ideal but it’s worth a try. Another formula which is better called neocate would also be an option but this is R400 for a small tin. So tonight he is just on his drip and tomorrow we will try the soya. As far as what is wrong? It could be a reaction to the formula or it could just be a stomach reaction. I can’t say myself what I think it is. I know Dr. P has tried his best, he has done all the necessary tests. We did allergy tests yesterday which was all normal, we tested for coeliac disease which was normal. His bloods were ok. So tomorrow we are going to do a barium test to see what is happening when formula is in the stomach and also an ultrasound to see what is going on in there. Hopefully Jason won’t be scared of the machine and these tests go smoothly.
Anyway my eyes are literally closing as I type this. I must get to bed. A LONG day!!! Jason is sleeping with one of daddy’s balloons too cute!!
