One of Jason's unusual symptoms is he doesn't feel pain, he doesn't feel hot or cold. We have had many instances in his life where he has hurt himself or burnt himself and he doesn't actually feel it at the time. We feel that this is part of his mitochondrial disease (although he hasn't been diagnosed yet). When Jason was a baby he turned the hot tap on in the bath. He was tippy toeing in the bath and his feet were burning. Last year Jason went outside and put both his hands on the Weber braai lid and without realizing it was hot he burnt both his hands on the lid. Two weeks ago I was making popcorn in the microwave. I went to help Nicole with something and Jason opened the micorowave, took out the hot glass dish and when I got to him he was standing there holding the hot glass dish in his hands. Yesterday when I took them to swimming lessons, they both didn't have shoes on (which they never do) and while walking on the tar road, Jason was way ahead of us and Nicole next to me. Nicole suddenly complained that her feet were burning. By the time I got to Jason both his feet had been burnt and he now has two blisters under both feet :-(. Of course I feel terrible but unfortunately I did not know that the tar was burning him. We have to be so careful with Jason hurting himself and him not feeling hot or cold. Two weeks ago his sister threw a stone at him and hit him on the head. I only realized when I saw the blood on his head and there was a nice hole from the stone - not a tear from Jason. Whenever Jason hurts himself he never cries. It's quite scary and we have to be SO careful.
