So Octagam finally started at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. I knew we were in for a late night but I was happy to know that at least we would all be home and in our own beds and together as a family. Dr. P came to see Jason and we noticed he was very quiet and quite jittery. Dr. P examined him. Everything seemed ok except his one ear was red indicating a middle ear infection. Dr. P was happy to discharge us with oral antibiotics for the infection. Some of the bloods came in and nothing out of the ordinary was present. The CRP levels were to follow. Well that fantasy of going home changed at about 8:00pm last night. Jason had been sleeping from about 5:30pm which is strange for him and all of a sudden he woke up screaming, almost choking, crying and looked like he was in pain. He had a low grade fever of 37.6 and was quite jittery. I asked the nurses to phone Dr. P who was still in the building as I was not happy with what I was seeing. He examined Jason again and besides the red ear seemed fine. He was rubbing his tummy as well. I explained Jason's symptoms and told him about the urinating. I had changed his nappy that was a full nappy full of urine. After changing him, about 2 mins later his new nappy was full again. He had obviously had a lot of fluids due to the octagam (400mls) so we thought maybe it was that. Anyway Dr. P got the blood results and it showed that his CRP levels were high therefore indicating that he had an infection of some sort. It was either the ear or possibly a urinary tract infection. We decided it would be better to stay overnight for observation and to do a urine MCS test and urine creatinine test.
This morning when I took the urine I did notice it was quite cloudy looking (not clear) and quite yellow in color. The results came back showing that Jason has puss cells in his urine (over 100) which Dr. P suggests it is a urinary tract infection. Dr. P contacted Prof B this morning and Prof B is not happy with the amount of puss cells in the urine. He advised Dr. P that he would come and see me and Jason tomorrow afternoon. He also advised Dr. P that Jason would need a few days IV antibiotics to get rid of the infection. So by the sounds of things we are here for at least 5 days of IV antibiotics. With Jason's history of kidney disease as well as being immunodeficient we can't take a chance and ignore the fact that he has this infection. With him malabsorbing oral antibiotics probably won't help too much and an IV would be more effective as well. The protein in the urine was 1.26 so that has come down a bit from 2.48 two weeks ago.
Our family has been having a hard time with everyone being sick. Nicole ended up having the same H Influenzae bacterial infection that Jason had which ended up as bronchial pneumonia as well as tonsillitis and I was in hospital with her for 4 days and now we are still here with Jason. I seem to spend more time here than at home. I am missing Bruce terribly. We hardly see each other, only for a few mins swapping shifts or visiting. Bruce is on Nicole duty again still trying to give her medications and nebulizing as her cough hasn't gone yet. It's been really tough on us and the thought of another 5 days is just terrible. I also have a tax deadline on Friday so what I may have to do is leave Jason with the nurses for the morning, go to work and then come back to hospital. I am worried about Nicole as well not being well. At least it's weekend now and Bruce is looking after her. I hope she is a lot better by Monday. I can't be in 3 different places at once. Hospital, home and work. Everything will work itself out I guess. All in God's time.
Time for me to catch some sleep. Please all keep Jason, Nicole, Bruce and myself in your prayers.
