Well already polygam was on Wednesday the 7th September. The weeks are flying bye and already next week it is time for the next dose. Unfortunately even with booking an isolation room, the room was taken up with an infected child. So unfortunately we had to be in a general ward, which I am normally petrified the whole day as we sit there because of bugs and infections. There were a few surgery patients and one or two with temps but no kids coughing all over the show thank goodness. Still always a worry for me though. For some reason the drip went ever so slowly even though it was set at 85mls an hour. We got there by 8am and only left at 6:45pm. A very long day but otherwise Jason was a very good boy and everything went smoothly. The only unfortunate thing for me was a little weight loss of 100grams in 3 weeks. I was really hoping for a weight gain but 100grams isn't too bad. He was 13.7kgs.
Last week I got a call from Dr. P (Jason's fantastic paed) from his cell phone to mine. Imagine my surprise!! He asked "Hows Jason" and of course I said that he was great is doing so well. He then said to me that the blood culture came back from last week (which I didn't even know he had taken) and Jason has salmonella again. This was picked up in the blood culture which takes about a week to show. I was very surprised because Jason had been doing so well apart from a few runny, watery poos and the odd gag here and there. I thought the odd gag was because I had taken him off the vallergan on the Friday night to see if we could do without that at night. So that explained the symptoms he was having. But he didn't have any temperatures and seemed pretty fine to us. I must admit Bruce and myself were very surprised and pleased that Jason's body has been fighting off this infection all on it's own for so long! We were a week into him having salmonella and he didn't show any major symptoms. We are use to the runny tummy because he has that all the time.
Salmonella is a bacteria that you get from contaminated food (like food poisoning). Jason has had salmonella about 4 times. Dr. P suggested that we start giving Jason filtered water and no tap water as he could be getting this from the tap water (even though I boil his water). We stay on a farm so this could be the case?? Anyway also with these tube fed children they are prone to catching these sort of bacterial infections. They have a permanent open wound in their tummy with a mic-key tube in their tummy that could catch these bacteria as well as the feeding tubes, syringes and pump sets and bags. I try my best to sterilize everything as best as I can but who knows? Ideally you are meant to use one pump set and one bag a night for feeds but that would cost R160 per night just for those. So what I do is wash them in boiling water, sterilize them like you would a baby bottle in sterilon and re-use for a few days. Unfortunately medical aid will not pay for pump sets, bags and medicated formula and we cannot afford to throw them away every day at R160 a night!
We have had the odd day where he has been a bit off colour and the poos have been bad but also the antibiotics make those worse as well. He is on a probiotic twice a day so we are doing everything we can. Otherwise he has been going to school fine and had some wonderful days were you would think he had nothing wrong with him. This just shows us that his immune system is getting better!!
