Today we were allowed to start therapies and join play picnic again. We have had a bit of a frustrating day. The hardest part is we are into our second week of reducing tube feeds but with Jason he hasn’t been able to partake in the therapies and play picnic with the other children. The play picnic is a very important part of the tube weaning therapy. As long as Jason is isolated and on his own, he isn’t going to want to eat. I feel that we are at a disadvantage of only starting play picnic when already his tube feeds have been reduced so much and for so many days. Normally play picnic starts on day 1 of reducing and the reducing is slowly and they get use to play picnic still on a satisfied tummy. I could be wrong?
Today swimming went well, of course Jason loves swimming. After swimming we had occupational therapy but the therapist was off sick. Then we had music scheduled but there was no room available to do music in. So we waited for play picnic which was at 12:00 in the meantime we waited to get Jason weighed. There was such a long queue and eventually we were called. By that time Jason was already in a mood and would not stand on the scale to be weighed. He was pretty hysterical. I think it was from the amount of people in the room and the noise in there. Finally we were weighed on the baby scale and he weighed 11.08 – dropped quite a bit.
By the time we got to play picnic Jason was in such a state that he was screaming and screaming. We did try though – we don’t give up easily. I took him into play picnic and he didn’t want to partake. He just cried and wanted to sit on my lap. Elisabeth the speech therapist sat with us and was so sweet and helpful. She tried everything to encourage Jason by playing with food, playing with the water bottle but he wouldn’t have it. It was quite hard having everyone stare at us, you don’t know whether the right thing is to leave the room or stay. You are too scared to leave in case you are told to stay but at the same time you don’t want to stay because Jason is disrupting the whole play picnic.
In the afternoon we went back to the B&B and were chatting to Eva and her husband, an Austrian couple staying at our B&B. They were here last week and were back for one night. They took us out to a lovely dinner at a little wine restaurant up the road. We tried all the Austrian cold meats, cheeses and pâtés. They were really lovely. Such a nice afternoon watching the beautiful sun set and sitting out in the fresh Austrian air. It really is a beautiful country here, so green and full of beautiful trees. It was such a nice distraction from all the pressure and stress.
Jason did try two tuk biscuits while we were out which was a good thing but goodness me, once he had chewed them he was hysterical again. We couldn’t do anything to soothe him, tried taking him to the slide, walking around, he was inconsolable. I think he wanted the biscuit out but there was no getting that biscuit out. Eventually I managed to calm him. He didn’t want his daddy, only his mommy. Lay on my lap and just cuddled me for ages.
Tonight we were allowed to give him 400mls formula. We haven’t reduced it more because of him being sick and needing his strength.
