The Polygam is the medication for Jason's immune system. We repeated the bloods which confirmed that his IGG, immunoglobulin levels were low below normal which would mean that Jason is prone to catching everything and his body doesn't have enough antibodies to fight infections. This is why he gets sick every 2 weeks and we are in hospital so often. We have done another blood test yesterday which will give us more information. Anyway the paed wanted to start the Polygam while we were here and has requested medical aid to cover. He obviously asked us whether we are happy with this given the chances that medical aid may decline it. The cost of this dose that Jason needs is in the region of R4,000.00. The reason why Polygam is so expensive is because it is made up of human blood plasma taken from no less than 1000 blood donors and there is also a huge shortage. I think Jason had Polygam in Neonatal ICU after he was born and for those doses we also had to motivate why. We are just hoping that medical aid will cover. We have more than enough reason to need it.
Jason's temperatures are normal again, he has stopped gagging and vomiting and the only concern is his wheezy chest. I don't think it's too bad, it is a slight wheeze that can only be heard with a stethescope and you really have to listen to hear it.
We are continuing with the nebbing and physio and suctioning and also the iv antibiotics. Hopefully he will be clear tomorrow, I really hope so!
The best news ever was after being told that there is a shortage of Polygam and not thinking that we would be able to start treatment, I got the fantastic news that the pharmacy courier had gone to fetch it (this was at 4pm). I was over the moon but still concerned when we didn't have the medicine at 5:30pm.
BUT the medicine arrived and is up. It will take 8 hours through the iv line while Jason sleeps. I am so excited. I really hope that this medication is going to help Jason. I believe from talking to other parents and the nurses that it really does make a difference!!
I managed to sneak out today and do the balance of my Christmas shopping while Jason had an afternoon nap. It was great to get out and feel like it's Christmas. This year for Christmas, all I want is for Jason to be healthy so that we can focus on his eating and forget all about how sick he gets!!
I see I still have a few followers following Jason's Journey. Our little man has so many people following his progress and praying for him and this is absolutely fantastic. Thank You!!
